Frequently Asked Questions
How many miles do I need for Yachtmaster Offshore?
2,500 nautical miles minimum, including 50 days at sea (5 as skipper), 5 passages over 60 nautical miles, 2 overnight passages, 12 night hours, and experience in both tidal and non-tidal waters.
What counts as a 'day at sea'?
A day at sea is a 24-hour period (crossing midnight). Shorter passages of 4+ hours can count toward your total, with multiple short passages combining to equal one day.
Do I need 50% tidal miles?
Yes, for Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore, at least half your qualifying miles must be in tidal waters. This ensures you have experience with tidal planning and navigation.
Can I track my progress automatically?
Yes! Create a free Crew the Boat account to log passages and track your progress automatically. Your calculator values will pre-populate from your logbook data.
