You're speedrunning Day Skipper. The syllabus is the map. Your instructor is the continuous assessment. Get the sequence right and you'll save time, money, and frustration.

  1. Pick and book your Day Skipper Practical date first.
  2. Start Day Skipper Theory immediately and finish it at least a week before practical.
  3. Cover the experience RYA lists: 5 days onboard, 100 miles, and 4 hours night sailing. Your practical week may count towards this. Ask your provider what they require before you arrive.
  4. Do one focused "rust removal" day before the practical week.
  5. Show up with tides, pilotage, and basic boat handling already in your hands.

What You're Actually Getting

Day Skipper has two parts:

Day Skipper Theory (shorebased): RYA sets the minimum duration at 40 hours plus exam time. You can do it classroom, online, or distance learning.

Day Skipper Practical (sailing): The practical course is typically 5 days, or split formats such as weekends or 3+2. This is on-the-water training with continuous assessment by your instructor.

The Experience RYA Lists for Day Skipper Practical

RYA lists the required experience as:

  • Basic sailing ability
  • 5 days onboard
  • 100 miles
  • 4 hours night sailing
  • Navigation and theory knowledge to Day Skipper Shorebased level

Training centres vary on how strictly they enforce this up front. Some expect you to meet it before you arrive. Others will accept you if you're close and clearly capable. The practical week may also count toward parts of this. Ask your provider what they require.

Step 1: Book the Practical Course Date First

Do this first because it creates a deadline and stops "research" from becoming your new sport.

  2. What is included vs extra (fuel, marina fees, food kitty, bedding, course notes)?

Step 2: Do Theory Like You Mean It

RYA says 40 hours plus exam time. Plan for it.

Fast pace that works for most people:

  • 10 to 12 hours a week for 4 weeks, or
  • 2 hours a day for about 3 weeks

Finish theory at least a week before practical. Some providers require proof of completion or a clear equivalent level before you start the practical course.

If You Only Master Three Theory Areas

  1. Tides (heights and streams, including secondary ports)
  2. Pilotage planning (transits, clearing bearings, what you do when the plan needs changing)
  3. Lights and buoyage (because you will care about this when it's dark)

Step 3: Get the Miles and Night Sailing the Cheap Way

You need 5 days, 100 miles, and 4 hours night sailing. The cost-effective method is usually trips that actually go somewhere, not endless pottering.

Good value options:

  • Mile-building weekends that include real passage legs
  • Coastal hops with an owner or club where you can do navigation tasks
  • Short deliveries where miles rack up quickly

What matters:

  • You can log the miles properly
  • You are underway after dark (not just "it was dark while we were tied up")
  • You get hands-on nav and pilotage reps, not passenger miles

Keep a Clean Log

Record for each trip: date, boat, skipper, miles, night hours. This becomes evidence if your provider asks.

Step 4: Do One Rust Removal Day

One day of focused practice reduces the chance you spend your practical week relearning basics.

Use a day sail or coaching session to rehearse:

  • Leaving and coming alongside under power
  • Slow-speed control and stopping
  • Briefing a crew and running a simple plan
  • Basic MOB drill (enough that it isn't brand new)

Rulebook for Not Wasting Money

Rule 1: Buy Fixes, Not Feelings

If you are weak on tides, do tides. If you are weak on close quarters, do close quarters. Don't pay for confidence; pay for competence.

Rule 2: Cheapest Headline Price Is Rarely Cheapest Total Cost

Ask about extras. Get a clear breakdown. Fuel, marina fees, food kitty, and course materials can add hundreds to the actual cost.

Rule 3: Do Not Arrive at the Practical Week Cold on Chartwork

Practical is where you apply theory under pressure. If you're still puzzling over tidal height calculations, you'll waste time that should be spent on boat handling.

Rule 4: Plan Night Hours Deliberately

If you need them, make sure you will be underway after dark somewhere in your plan. Don't leave it to chance.

Before you step onto the boat for your practical course, you should be able to tick these off:

Navigation and Planning

  • Solve a tidal height problem confidently
  • Plot a fix (bearing intersections, transits)
  • Run DR and turn it into a sensible next action
  • Build a pilotage plan with transits and clearing bearings

Boat Handling and Seamanship

  • Helm on all points of sail
  • Reefing feels like a procedure, not a debate
  • Come alongside and leave under power safely
  • Keep a proper lookout and make clear collision-avoidance decisions
